Current News: Slovak Alligator Armored Vehicle Purchase Halted

BRATISLAVA - Slovak Defense Minister Frantisek Kasicky has ordered that the Ministry's order of 105 Alligator 4X4 armored personnel carriers be halted due to their increasing cost and technical defects. The Alligator is domestically produced by the Vojensky Opravarensky Podnik (Military Repair Plant) in Trencin and the SKK2 billion contract agreed to was considered a key step in the force-wide modernization of the Slovak military. But with the price of each Alligator steadily increasing (SKK20 million per vehicle, or around $800,000 - up from the original $700,000) the ministry has realized it can purchase similar vehicles outside of Slovakia for half the price.

In addition the Trencin Military Repair Plant is experiencing financial struggles and finished on the negative side of the fiscal ledger in 2006. But because other Slovak engineering firms - Kerametal and Konstrukta Defense - are involved the effect of the MoD's actions on the domestic industry side may have wide repercussions. Legal challenges may be mounted, but Kasicky has emphasized that the final price of each vehicle be reduced rather than wholesale production stopped. In December 2005 some twenty new Alligators were delivered to the Slovak military, which has used them in its operations in Kosovo.
